Charred Wood Process

The carbonization process using the traditional Yakisugi method is a meticulous and time-honored technique that transforms wood into a remarkably more resistant, durable, and visually unique material. Through fire, we enhance its natural properties, improving its performance against the elements and turning it into a premium architectural option with distinctive character.

Here are the key steps in this process:

Selection

We carefully choose the most suitable woods for carbonization, ensuring they are straight, crack-free, and have a limited number and size of knots, according to strict technical criteria. This rigorous selection guarantees strength, durability, and natural beauty, ensuring the best results after treatment.

Carbonization

We burn the wood following the Yakisugi method, reaching temperatures of up to 1100 °C. This process forms a carbon-rich outer layer and an underlying layer of pyrolysis, providing exceptional protection. The carbonization is controlled and tailored to each piece of wood to ensure a uniform result.

Brushing

Using specialized brushes, we carefully remove the surface ash layer. This reveals the wood’s natural texture and highlights its original beauty, without compromising the protection achieved through carbonization.

Sealing with Oil

We apply a special blend of eco-friendly, water-based oil that bonds and seals the carbon surface, preventing dusting and staining. This treatment also enhances and preserves the deep color of the finish, maintaining its rich, vibrant appearance over time.

Quality Control

Each piece of Shou Sugi Ban wood is rigorously inspected to ensure it meets our high standards of quality and craftsmanship. Only products that pass all tests reach our customers, guaranteeing unmatched excellence and durability.
